Pup finds human skull northwest of Tucson; investigation ensues

A family dog’s discovery has prompted Pima County Sheriff’s investigators to search an area northwest of Tucson for human remains.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday by someone saying their dog had brought home a human skull, department spokeswoman Dawn Barkman said.

The skull, which was found in an area near the 13200 block of West Orange Grove Road in Picture Rocks, was determined to have some unnatural defects, Barkman said.

The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office was unable to determine a cause of death from the skull, she said.

Officers with the department’s search and rescue and homicide units plan to spend part of today searching the area near where the skull was found to see if additional remains can be located, Barkman said.
